Maintaining a clutter free home
  • Get rid of junk mail immediately by opening mail daily over garbage and recycle bin. The rest can be grouped in categories that make sense to you like Bills to pay, Actions items, Things to read.

  • Use a free automatic bill payment service (typically through your bank) instead of writing monthly checks which saves time and postage.

  • To stop a good portion of junk mail go to the Direct Marketing Association website www.dmachoice.org and register for the mail preference service. Cut down catalogs by visiting www.catalogchoice.org. You can also stop all those credit card offers by calling 1-888-5OPTOUT. Finally if you do not wish to receive sales calls register for the do not call list at www.donotcall.gov.

  • For every new item coming into your home, discard one existing item to keep clutter from accumulating.

  • Turn all hangers in your closet towards you. When you wear something, return the item with the hanger turned away from you. In six months you can determine what items have not been worn simply by examining the direction of the hanger. At that time you can donate, consign or toss those items.

  • Attach a long straight magnet to the inside of a medicine cabinet that can hold small metal objects like tweezers and nail clippers.

  • Determine which spots accumulate the most clutter and devote a few minutes each day to cleaning these areas up.
